Dinner for Six

Dinner was served at seven and eaten in near silence. Marianne noticed that everyone, without discussing it, had chosen a seat with their back to a wall. The cook brought six identical plates. Cousin Roderick swapped his with Marianne's when he thought no one was watching, and Marianne, who had been watching everyone all evening, swapped it quietly back, and ate, and watched him watch her eat.
