Chapter 1
The Boy on the Dock
Caleb came home on a Tuesday, and by Thursday I had stopped expecting him to talk.
I want to be fair about it. He talked. He said pass the salt, and he said the dock needs new boards, and once, when our mother asked how the drive had been, he said fine in a voice that closed the subject like a screen door. But the brother I had texted forty times a week for a year, the one who used to narrate his own life out loud as if it were a sportscast, that brother had not come back from college. Someone who looked like him had come back instead, wearing his face a size too large.
Let me tell you about my brother before, so you understand what came back. Caleb at eighteen had been the loudest gentle person I ever knew. He was the kind of older brother who narrated, who could not let a thing happen near him without telling you what he thought of it, and his opinions were never important and always delivered as if they were. He had theories about everything. He believed gas stations had souls and that some of them were happy. He had once kept a younger cousin entertained through an entire four-hour car ride purely by inventing a running commentary on the lives of the cows we passed. That was Caleb. He filled the air, and the air had been better full, and I had spent my whole childhood inside the warm noise of him without ever once thinking to be grateful for it, the way you don't think to be grateful for a sound until the day it stops.
I found him on the dock that first afternoon. He was sitting with his feet in the water, which was strange, because Caleb hated the lake. He always said it smelled like a wet dog's opinion of itself. But there he was, jeans rolled to the knee, staring at the place where the water went from green to a darker green, and he didn't turn around when the boards creaked under me — and that was strange too, because the old Caleb turned around at everything, the old Caleb had a head that swiveled toward any sound like a bird's, hungry for the next thing to have an opinion about.
"You're home," I said, which was a stupid thing to say to someone who was visibly home.
"I'm home," he agreed.
I sat down next to him. The wood was warm and splintery and familiar. Across the lake, the Hendersons' kids were screaming the particular scream that means joy, and a motorboat dragged a white scar across the water and then let it heal. I waited for Caleb to say something about the screaming, or the boat, or the summer, or me. He used to have an opinion about everything. He once gave me a nine-minute review of a sandwich.
He didn't say anything. He just watched the water move.
"Mom made the lasagna," I tried. "The good one. With the layers."
"Smelled it."
"She's been planning it since you called about your finals."
He nodded. A small nod, the kind you give a stranger holding a door. I felt something in my chest go tight and hot, the feeling you get when you've been talking to someone for a while before you realize they haven't been listening, and you have to decide whether to be embarrassed or angry.
I picked embarrassed. I usually do.
"I'm glad you're back," I said, and I stood up too fast, and the dock rocked, and a little brown wave slapped the post.
Caleb looked at me then. For just a second his eyes were the eyes I knew, and they were so tired that I almost sat back down. Almost. But he turned back to the water before I could, and the second closed up, and I walked back to the house alone with the smell of lasagna getting stronger and the screen door waiting to slap shut behind me.
I want to be honest about what I did with the rest of that first day, because it matters, because it was the first brick in a wall I would spend all summer adding to. I went inside, and my mother looked up from the stove with her face arranged into a hope so careful it was painful to look at, and she said, "Did you see him? How does he seem?" — and I had a choice, right there, on the very first afternoon. I could have told her the truth. I could have said he seems wrong, Mom, he seems switched off, something is broken and I don't know what. I was sixteen and I could feel the wrongness like a change in air pressure before a storm.
But my mother's face was so hopeful, and the lasagna smelled so much like a thing that was supposed to fix everything, and I did not want to be the one who put the storm into the kitchen.
So I said, "He seems tired. From the drive." And I watched my mother's shoulders come down half an inch with relief, and I understood, dimly, that I had just learned how to do the family's new language without anyone teaching me. You took the true thing, and you found the smaller, softer, more bearable thing standing next to it, and you handed over the soft one and kept the true one in your pocket. Everyone in my family was about to become fluent in this. I was just the first one to use it that summer, on the very first day, to my own mother, over a pan of lasagna.
That was the first day. I told myself he was just tired from the drive. College was hard, everyone said so. He'd be himself by the weekend. He'd be himself by the Fourth of July at the latest, because Caleb loved fireworks more than he loved most people, and you could not be a stranger and love fireworks. It wasn't allowed.
I believed that for about three weeks. This is the story of the three weeks, and everything that came after them, and the summer my family spent learning a new language because the old one had stopped working and nobody wanted to be the first to say so out loud.
I was sixteen. I thought silence was something that happened to you. It took me the whole summer to learn that silence is something you build, board by board, like a dock, and that two people can stand on the same one for a long time before either of them admits the water underneath is deep.
